    Hi ! Thank you so much for your videos, they are so helpful ! Your art is a great inspiration for me. Do you think to make a video about the construction of a portfolio ? Because, I work to be a concept artist and do you think it’s better to have more sketches design in the book, or more polished images ? Thank you again Have a nice day !

    I finally spent a weekend to finish this practice. Thanks Grady, once again I learned more things from you. Never realize how importance the notan sketch can be. Because during my work, some colleagues might find it's kind of a waste of time painting from black and white , more of like an old school style for them. 🤣 Especially when u can creat a desigh with Blender. But this vd shows how critical the fundamental is. From what I've learned from this, I think notan sketch is focused on the abstract SHAPES and value groups between light and dark which can provide u a more clear head before you go futher into the value sketch.

    A great video. Creatives of any type need to know that they aren’t the only ones who run into fear while trying to do their work. Have you read the book “Art & Fear”? I really thought your final image nailed the scale relationships of the forest, tower and single traveler. The tower though, due to the lighting, almost looks inviting, compared to the darker areas of the forest. I wonder if something can be done to add a greater sense of menace to the tower itself? I think maybe it looks like there are no dark, enclosed spaces left, it’s all open to the light. I’ve run into abandoned houses in wooded areas, and it was the enclosed spaces that were the most creepy. But good work, you really put across the value of being methodical, and not getting ahead of yourself, while still allowing for many creative iterations. Definite “subscribe”!

    One of my main issues with backgrounds unlike character design has always been layer management. I always second guess myself if I should add some details or whatnot on the smae layer, or a new one to keep it nondestructive. And at times my foreground, midground and background come out looking like paper cutouts. Then there's also the composition aspect and even though I know it's about telling a story I feel it always fails in that department.

    • @gradyfrederickart
      @gradyfrederickart 4 дні тому

      Thanks! I am not terribly proficient with the adjustment tools in procreate yet, but yes I've used the gradient maps in procreate the same way :D The interface is quite different though, so it functions a bit differently than in PS. The other thing is that photoshop allows you to create gradient maps as a layer, which can be turned on/off and there can be multiple. As far as I've found, the gradient map function in Procreate will only allow you to adjust the painted layer directly.

    Hi Grady… you don’t really need to have a camera to record yourself talking. It takes a chunk out of the painting workspace, it puts more stress on you, and it can be distracting when we should be watching the workspace. We need to hear your voice clearly, and you need to convey useful information. You need to give us the best possible view of your workspace so we can actually see the process. So, having yourself in the corner of the screen adds nothing useful, but does have drawbacks. In many of the painting tutorial channels I watch I’ve never seen what the narrator looks like… the whole screen is dedicated to the painting app and supporting material, which is perfect. Thanks for taking the time to instruct all of us!

      Hey man, thanks for the kind words and the feedback. Honestly I have been wondering about this as well and trying to find the right balance. I was thinking maybe for the art portions I will remove the face cam, but still have an intro and outro like in my more recent videos (this one is quite old and I didn't really do any editing/proper camera setup). The reason for the video in the first place is that I personally like to see the faces of creators as it makes me feel more connected with their perspective and them as a person. I really appreciate your feedback, and I will certain think more on this. I think you make some really good points. Thanks for watching :D

    Hi Grady, first of all thanks for your videos. You probably couldn't notice this comment but still I choose to share my real thoughts about this channel. Me as a rookie game artist have watched all of your videos carefully, thinking about how am I gonna sharp my skills through your vids. It's probably one of my best surprise this year to find an artist who is willing to teach things with all detailed art skills, painting process and his own thoughts about how to be a better professional concept artist. (I paid a lot to learn game art 2 years ago then I found I learned much more from you XD) Ngl I was at an emotional low point few months ago , starting to doubt my abilities of being an artist, questioning myself should I stick on the game industry or just go back to be an architect again. It's your words remind me of my passion for painting. Just keep practicing before thinking about money or finish smt really cool stuff. Once again thank you ,wish you all the best!

    I've been through several of your videos and loved them all! I had been looking for more real-time painting videos. Timelapse is great but sometimes I want to be able to see the deliberations and experimentation as they happen. I'd say even if you don't feel up to commentary, if you recorded your work and just selected certain phases to keep in realtime, timelapsing the rest, and upload it with music it would be great IMO. The commentary is good but I know it takes a certain energy and thoughtfulness you might not always have while deep in work.
